I am cursed. Very cursed. Every bit of technology that I touch dies. Even so, I'm still a hacker and geek. But, every laptop I've owned has died at random (without exposure to anything hazardous), and things just seem to break or die around me. If I walk within ten feet of a radio or antenna TV, everything goes to static. If I walk near a WiFi router or NIC, the signal drops to 0%. I must have some kind of strange electromagnetic property. If I hold the power cord of any lamp, it goes dim until I let go. Now I just have to work on force choke, and I'll be all set.

Also, my pulse and blood pressure at rest was just taken. 94 BPM and 180/110, respectively.

I can't figure out how to enable my multiple monitors.
My webcam doesn't function properly.
I can't read flash cards.
(New one) The P2K drivers to interface with my old cellphone don't work.

Guess what I had under the tree yesterday? A brand spanking now Roland guitar amp! Now I can stop using the mass I patched together using my dad's old tuner from college, my mom's stereo speakers from highschool, and some other speakers I got from Mike. I'm just dazzled by all the effects and other tools of joy built into this little box of happiness. It's like drugs, only legal, but just as addictive! I'll get a picture once I figure out how to get the fucking card reader to work.

Well, the mains line into my school basically melted yesterday. We had no power and no heat (it's about 15 degrees up here). We've been losing power every day for two weeks now, and the backups were so drained that we didn't have even emergency lighting. So, I probably won't be going back to my school for a while until they rewire the whole place.

Every day this week, and for a few days last week, my school had lost power. Just at complete random. We'd be sitting in class and all of a sudden *clunk*, everything shuts off. Then, five seconds later, the battery backups feebly try powering the entire building, and die two seconds later. I wouldn't have much of a problem with it, except the heating also fails. It gets fucking cold inside. Also, every day, I start my generator via my cellphone, only to find out that my house still had power. It's just the school. And, of course, all the idiotic girls in my class, all cheerleaders, screech like they're being shot at. I'd hate to see those people in a truly dangerous situation, even though it would be funny. I guess that's what I get for going to a shitty catholic highschool.

Well, that was disturbing.

Well, this is sad. I'm writing at 6:45 AM before school. Oh well.

Anyway. I just woke up screaming a battle cry, with the combat knife I keep under my pillow when I sleep drawn and held in front of me. I dreamed that Satan lived in my TV cabinet. And that Satan looked like the French teacher at my school, Mr. Demars*. I have no idea why. That's just how messed up I am.

*And Mr. Demars is, in reality, a kind and soft-spokem man. I have no idea why my brain made Satan look like him.

I woke up at 5:30 this morning as I always do. Turn on the TV. Oh, look, school is canceled. I look out the window. No snow coming down. My street is clear (which is rare indeed, it's normally plowed a day or two after the storm). So, I now have a nice full day to catch up on all of my work.

Let's review my week so far:

*Thursday- I have 1st period, then a 3-period Mass, then we're let out after. I walk home by noon.
*Friday- No school. Professional Development Day.
*Saturday- Nothing
*Sunday- Nothing
*Monday- Snow day
*Tuesday- School
*Wednesday- School
*Thursday- School
*Friday- Christmas Break starts. No school until January 2nd.

The search for The Beater Log - Part 1

Way back in '96 (I think, it might have been '94), a new version of IRC was released that had a massive security hole. Through a certain command that I completely forget, you could make other people on the channel say things. This was (ab)used once on #quake before it was quickly patched. The group there tortured a poor guy named Beater using this, and it became a part of Quake history. Now, that log has apparently disappeared off of the 'net. I know I have a copy of the log somewhere. It's probably on my old laptop (the 486), or the slightly less older one (the Pentium III), or the new-yet-broken one (The P4). Now to find it.....

Protecting ourselves

I just sent this to several newspapers in America. I wonder if it will get published.

The recent shootings at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska and the two Colorado churches show a disturbing trend in America. That trend is the disarmament of the American people. We have lost the will to fight for ourselves.

Our current protection is from only the police forces and related groups. These people do their job exceedingly well, and I have great respect for them. However, they are not, and never will enough. The police cannot respond fast enough to stop violent crime. We need a defense everywhere.

The only defense of this sort is concealed-carry by citizens.

Banning firearms is not a solution. If a criminal is determined enough to commit the crime of murder, then he will not even care about breaking a gun-ban law, or the rules of a mall.

If concealed-carry is open to citizens, and is commonplace, then crime will decrease because the criminal will have no idea who could stop him. This has been shown in countless situations. When gun control is relaxed, crime rates similarly go down. When gun control is enforced, crime goes up. This is not an opinion. This is fact. This has been proven.

When- not if, but when- an event of this sort occurs again, I pray that someone there will have a firearm, and will stop the criminal.

Why are people so fake?

I mean, honestly, every day I see people walking around school, living their manufactured lives. Or, rather, I see the several millimeters of makeup that cover them. They all cycle through [gender]-friends monthly, and get to sloppy third base with each one. Then they break up and hate each other. Of course, none of them get to fourth base because then they would be labeled a "skank". Then they all misbehave in school, and do all sorts of other annoying things.

Well, fuck that.Then, all of the people like me just get considered outcasts and freaks, because we are normal. They'll be bagging my groceries in a few years.

Hahahahaha. I win.

IBM T20 and T30 Problems

I love IBM laptops. They are reliable, well designed, and all around good. I am the ~~rabid~~ avid user of two models, the T20 and the T30. However, there is one frustrating problem with all IBM laptops. After a year or two of use, the CMOS battery fails and they don't boot! This then results in me disassembling a laptop with a leatherman, buying IBM part #19923962-Something, and installing it myself, and the laptop never is the same again. It is terribly annoying, and being without a laptop for me is like being without hands, or eyes. I can't wait for nuclear batteries.

VW Bug dragster Part 1

In an ongoing process to convert a 1973 VW Beetle into a dragster, here is the state of affairs:

Needs a new carburettor
The wiring harness is still in the box (diagrams from http://www.thesamba.com/ helped)
Most of the paint is sandblasted off
Original flat-4 engine is in shaky condition
Drive train is in unknown condition
Interior is... rough.

The goal is to re-wire the whole car, tune the engine, replace the carburettor, and add high-traction tires. Also, the interior could use a little "sprucing up".

Is IRC dead?

Right now, I'm on Efnet and the 2600 IRC server. The thing is, there is no one there! I counted maybe six users at the most on some of the channels that were the most popular. In addition, some of my favorite channels like #quake have disappeared. I've been away from IRC for a while now, and I suppose that AIM and Skype and that lot has taken over internet communications. Still, it's kind of sad that IRC is dying. This means that there probably will never be anything like the Beater Log again.

Math + Average student = Boredom

The freshman math book is a scary thing. Not because it is difficult, but because the table of contents lists the same things as my 4th grade Addison-Wesley math book (and I didn't go to an advanced school, just an inner-city public school). Area of a circle? Learned that in 3rd grade. Area of a square? Learned it in kindergarten. Area of a triangle? Learned it in 4th grade. All of this being taught again to freshman? Absolutely.

And people ask why American youth is declining?

In addition, the book itself weighs 8 pounds (about 3 kilos, if I remember the conversion properly). I recently came across an 1895 edition algebra book (O'Hare, or something close to that). It was smaller than your average paperback, the book itself was in hardback, and with everything from Pre-Algebra up to Trigonometry. How was it so small? Not smaller text, not less content. Magic? No

No Extra Crap

In the math book I am looking at now, there are about 10 or 15 square inches of random stuff. On the page I am on ow, there is a picture of an overturned truck, and a map of Japan's seismology recordings. Why is that there? I don't know! Ask the editor (his name is unlisted).

What little information is listed in the book, each tidbit is backed by dozens of "Example" problems. Now, why do the "Example" problems ask for an answer? If they were examples, the solution would be reached after the problem is solved and shown step-by-step.

I believe the problems are also designed with torture of the student in mind, making him draw unnecessarily large graphs (y=18x+17 - Graph this line using -5, 0, and 5 as points).

And back to the extra crap, the next page has a huge (3 inch by 4 inch) picture of the insertion points of a nuclear breeder reactor. I understand how this correlates to coordinate planes, but why do they have to put in a picture?

All in all, math classes blow. Enough said. I love math. I taught myself calculus because I love it so much. But the education system has killed the fun of it. End of rant.
